Cleveland residents with an interest in policing are invited to provide an impartial and independent voice on police misconduct panels.
Police and Crime Commissioner Steve Turner has a statutory responsibility to establish a pool of local people available to sit on misconduct hearings and appeals tribunals for Cleveland Police.
Prospective members should live, work or study in Cleveland. It’s important independent members reflect the diversity of Cleveland’s communities. As a result, the PCC is keen to recruit people from ethinically diverse backgrounds.
A police misconduct hearing considers allegations of serious misconduct by police officers or special constables. Allegations could include things like criminal activity or neglect of duty.
Police Officers have the right of appeal against findings made under police conduct and performance regulations to a Police Appeal Tribunal.
Cleveland PCC Steve Turner said: “Independent members allow further independent and impartial views from outside policing at hearings and tribunals.
“They help misconduct hearings to reach fair and evidence-based judgements about a police officer’s conduct and to assist in decisions on appropriate sanctions.”
Part-time and flexible
The role of an Independent member is part-time, flexible and can fit around other commitments.The initial term of office is five years and members can claim fees and expenses.
Independent members sit on approximately three hearings per year in Cleveland. There may also be opportunities to sit on panels in other parts of the North of England
All applicants must be over 18 and available to attend a training session to be arranged later. All appointments are subject to satisfactory vetting clearance.
The closing date for applications is 25 July 2022 with interviews taking place during week commencing 8 August 2022.
