The police precept is paid by residents to help cover the cost of local policing and victims’ services.
It is collected with Council Tax payments in Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland.
Money from the precept goes to the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC,) who then allocates funds to Cleveland Police.
The PCC has a duty to consult residents before making recommendations on precept levels to Cleveland’s Police and Crime Panel.
Just 26% of the PCC’s £169m annual budget for 2022-23 came from the policing precept. Most police, community safety and victims’ services funding comes from Government grants.
Cleveland’s annual policing precept in 2022-23 is £275.73 for Band D properties. However, most householders pay much less as they live in properties, which are rated Band A or B.
Just 1% of the budget is spent on staffing in the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC.)

Policing Precept for 2023-24
Cleveland PCC Steve Turner has just published the results of a consultation on the 2023-4 precept.
The consultation asked Council Tax payers, businesses and their representatives how much they were prepared to pay towards policing Cleveland.
